Our Story: Building a Basketball Community
Founded in 2023 by Lisa Keegans-Wood—a former BUCS, WEBBA, and National League player and Bristol Flyers Academy U12 coach—MAD (Mangotsfield and Downend) Hoops Basketball Club emerged to fill a gap in local youth basketball in north-east Bristol. Initially created as a safe, supportive space for Lisa’s own sons and their friends, the club quickly evolved into a thriving community, passionate about developing talent and fostering lifelong friendships.
In it's very first season, the club grew from one training session to three. By the second season, that momentum had expanded to include five sessions, development hubs, and holiday camps. This rapid growth was fueled by the dedication of parents stepping up as committee members, coaches, officials, and team managers, alongside driven young players eager to be involved. Generous grants and sponsorships from local organizations and companies further boosted our ability to nurture young talent.
We proudly cater for boys and girls aged 6-16, offering opportunities through intra-club games, local friendlies, central venue tournaments (CVTs), and local youth leagues. Our teams have experienced notable successes despite us being a relatively new club:
-
U10s: A standout season with two CVT wins and numerous victories.
-
U12s: Encountering challenges while steadily building strength for the next season.
-
U14s: Showing significant improvement by advancing their league position and reaching the semi-finals of the trophy competition.
-
U16s: Despite being together for just a year, they've played competitively and are laying the groundwork for future success.
Looking forward to the 2025/26 season, we're excited to enter the WEBBA Junior Leagues across all age groups. Our vision, however, extends even further. We plan to eventually roll out basketball tots sessions for children aged 3-5, establish a dedicated U18 session, and create a clear pathway into local Men's and Women's teams.
At Hoops, every player is nurtured both on and off the court, building not just athletic skills but also character, resilience, and a sense of community. Come and get involved —join us as we continue to grow and inspire the next generation through the love of basketball.
